An old thought....
Jun. 29th, 2005 08:13 pmWhy do elementary schools and high schools drum the Dewey Decimal System into your head, when the college libraries are all Library of Congress organized? Why do we have two methods of book cataloging? Is the DDS prevalent in the rest of the world's research libraries? Why doesn't the Library of Congress use the DDS?
And what do school librarians drone about for ten-fifteen minutes at the beginning of each library class session now that most card catalogues are computerized? (seriously, did anyone else have a school librarian like that? Every time you had a class meeting in the library, from kindergarten on upwards, you had the lecture on how to use the card catalogue?)
And why am I remembering this now, when I haven't had to use the Library of Congress system in five years, and pretty much stick to the fiction side of the public library anyway?
